CHAPTER 5  - MISTAKEN

Asher Wood smiled his famous smile and as usual, the girls were swooning all over him. Particularly, his smile today was directed towards the lady seated at the bar in the nightclub he frequented. They called the place, Adna and the place sure gave pleasure unimaginable.
He shifted his attention back to the lady. There was something about her that drew him to her and he didn't resist the force at all.

He approached her and smiled seductively at her. It did nothing as to even make her flinch a muscle and he was amazed. This was the first time his smile hadn't worked. She just gave him a cursory look and went back to her drink.

He got another shock. She was taking a soda. No girl he had met in Adna ever took soda. It was either a scotch or brandy or something very stiff at that. Now, this girl was intriguing and he was bent on getting to know her.

She just looked totally out of place here. You could easily notice it, just by looking at her. Her posture, attire and even the atmosphere around her was different. She seemed to have a lot on her mind and looked so distracted, Asher literally was invisible to her. She finished her drink and got up to leave as she settled her bill and picked up her purse. Asher was intent on getting to know her and he followed her out of the place.

'Hey I saw you in there and you didn't look too good. Are you alright?'

She answered absent mindedly.
'Yeah, don't worry I am.'

'Well, I'm Asher, but you can call me Ash. Every one calls me that and you are...'

'...In a hurry to get home,' she said as her car pulled by her.

God, he loved her. He was stunned. This was no ordinary girl. She sure had the looks and the money. Her car alone was a testimony. There was a lot more to her and he never doubted his intuition; he was going to find out what. This time he knew he could never be more right.

As her driver opened her side of the car for her, she quickly stepped in.

'Well it was nice speaking to you, Mr...'

'Wood,' Asher quickly supplied.

'Enjoy the rest of your evening.' And the glass rolled up as the sleek car pulled away.
He was intrigued. He was definitely going to have get to know more about that girl. He smiled at the fading tail lights of the car.
'We will meet again, pretty dame. We sure will.' He said in a whisper to himself. With that he turned to walk back into Adna.

'Well, hello there handsome,' a blonde said sweetly to him as he walked by.
He really wasn't ready for any sprees tonight, after his little experience with the mystery damsel.

Just to get the girl of his back, he gave her a dazzling smile, displaying a set of white teeth and dimples anyone would kill for.
It worked this time, well it always did. Her heart missed three beats straight as she stood there mesmerised and looked like she was going to collapse anytime soon.
He took the opportunity and quickly dashed of.

He shook his head as he went along.
Girls. They never ceased to amaze him.
Well, it wasn't his fault that he was so good looking. He was an Adonis and he knew it and he was certain, that the mysterious lady would be all over him very soon.
He smiled a confident smile.
He was very certain.

Shadrach was stunned and was at loss as to what to say. He hadn't been wrong. He seldom was. He had been absolutely certain that Raymond Blood had been in the Adna.
Sending Ingrid in there had being to lure Blood out and he had been certain that Blood would take the bait. Obviously, he hadn't risen up to the occasion.

'Damn!' Shadrach slammed a fist on the dining table.

Ingrid looked anything but bothered.

'Look, Shady, i dont want to do this
anymore. Ever since that night, my life has been hell.

Ingrid sat up in her chair. 'Let's just let things be, ok? I don't want to find out who is behind all this, not anymore. Christ, I'm practically freaking out at everyone and everything I come into contact with. I suspect everyone and I can't seem to have a normal conversation with anyone without thinking that this person may be trying to kill me.'

'Grid, look we are going to catch these guys,' Shady reassured her as he took her hands in his.

She pulled back. 'Look, Shady I don't know what I want anymore but I do know one thing, that I don't want to investigate this matter any further.'

'I've been on a roller coaster ride these past few weeks and it's been a bumpy ride since my brother died. My best friend decides she can't cope with me anymore and wants out of the friendship without so much as a reason, everyone just doesn't want to be around me because he or she fears for their life, and I practically feel so lonely and without anyone to turn to.'

'Grid, look, I'm here for you....'

'I know Shady, but that doesn't reassure me anymore. I desire something more. There's this deep yearning within me for something greater and better, something that I don't think any man can give me, something that no matter how hard i try, I'm not getting. I'm hurt, broken, feel so betrayed, a whole gamut of emotions I can't even begin to explain are bottled up within me and I have no idea as to how to deal with them.'

Looking at her, there was not a word that came to mind to describe how distraught she looked.
'I feel totally helpless, and one of these days, I don't know how I'm going to end up.'
She looked up at me and I had to strain my ears to actually hear her.

'I thought doing this, going after his killers, would give me some satisfaction, but being out there today, desiring nothing more than to drive a stake through the bastard's heart, I still felt empty.
Doing all this, going after them, would not bring him back and it definitely would not take this feeling away. That I know for sure now.'

I tried to convince her. 'Grid, listen to me. You are obviously very much distressed which is the cause of your decision but look, we can get justice for your brother. We can get justice for Mike. Just trust me.'
She stood up to leave.

She laughed audibly. 'Trust, huh? Yeah well, i think that's my speciality but look where that got me. I've trusted enough and I'm done. I'm not certain if I'll ever heal, because that even seems like a fallacy now. I just know one thing.
She picked up her purse and she turned to go.

'I just need redemption and healing.'
With that she walked out of my house.
I just hoped she hadn't walked out of my life as well.
I'm Shadrach Lakes. Private investigator. Just a few people know what I do besides my actual job as a forensic investigator at the police department in my district.
The few who know my other identity and who are aware of my methods, which are very crude but effective all the same, found it appropriate to call me something else, hence the alias Shady. Not to blow my own horn but I am good at what i do.
An understatement.

I am a master at what I do and it takes me less time than normal to crack a case.
This current one however was different from the trend. For once I was stranded and it was frustrating. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the reason I was so intrested in this case, was because the girl I loved was involved in this mess.

I thought back to my plan the previous night which obviously had failed and it put me in a bad mood.
I finally had a location on Blood and had sent Ingrid there to lure him out.
He was supposed to be in the Adna. I was hundred percent certain of it but I had obviously been wrong. He had not been there. At least from what Ingrid said and what my men had observed.

Nothing had seemed out of the ordinary.
I don't know what had happened, but I do know one thing.
Blood had been there that night. He had been, and Grid was all the motivation he needed to show his face and yet somehow he hadn't.
Something had held him back. I knew that for sure. I didn't know what but I was going to find out...(to be continued)
