Chapter 7

"Phyll...honey..?"
"Hmmm...hmm.."
"Honey get up it's morning...you've got an early morning lecture remember?" my fiancee, Abigail, let out when i finally managed to open my eyes.

"I must have drifted off...Kwesi and I had quite an exciting day...where is he?" i inquired.
"He left when I got in later yesterday...you were still fast asleep...it was adorable." Abigail replied.

"What time is it?"
"It's almost a quater to six"
"Oops!...I'm going to be late!...why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
"Baby...that's what I've been trying to do for the past twenty minutes...whatever dream you were having must have been interesting...I heard Eloise's name...has she arrived yet?" Abigail stated when i was bustling to get to the bathroom.
"Yeah ...she has...we talked on the phone yesterday ...I hope to see her when i finish my lecture for the day." I said in response while i entered the shower.

"Alright...do send her my regards...i hope to meet her though...how does dinner with her tonight sound?"
"Ummm...I'll have to ask her when i see her...I'll text you the answer later" i told her when i entered into our bedroom half-wet , half-dried.

"Sounds like plan!" Abigail responded delightfully.
A few minutes later, i was ready and almost by the door to leave but then Abigail called out, "Aren't you forgetting something?"

"Ummmmm...no?" i stated feigning ignorance at the fact that she wanted me to kiss her before i left.

"My kiss Phyll...my kiss...people who are going to be married do that remember?" she said jokingly.

I went and obliged. Later, i was enroute to school. I taught Literature-In-English at the Accra State University. I got to the lecture room ten minutes late when my students were already seated.

I looked around the class after i had put my bag down. It was not unlike any Lit. class; just a handful of students in the room...majority of whom looked disinterested that morning. I taught them "Poetry and The Black Arts In Contemporary Societies" nonetheless.

An hour later into the lecture, I had gotten Maya Angelou's 'Still I rise'. I began:

"You may write me down in history
With your bitter twisted lies..."
Before i could add the rest....i heard a voice that was too familiar for me not recognize add:
"You may trod me in the very dirt
But still like dust, I'll rise"

The class and I turned to the direction where the voice had come from and there she stood _looking as clear as day, more beautiful than she had ever been spotting a black jeans and a blue blouse with a pair of shoes to match.

"'Still I Rise huh?...never gets old" she said while smiling.
"Yeah. " I replied.
I gave the class a reading assignment and ended lectures for the day. We found a quiet spot under a tree nearby and sat under it.

After staring at each other for what seemed like eternity, we finally burst out laughing and exchanged pleasantries.

"So you're getting married?!" she asked excitedly.
"Yeah...but you know that already...you are my best man...or woman?...i don't know how that works exactly" i said in response and we burst into laughter again.

"Whatever works for you barima" she offered jokingly.
"It's almost incredible to have you sitting here with me after all these years...Abigail is dying to meet you...I've told her so many stories about you...she can't wait to meet you now that you are here...Can you make it to dinner tonight at our home? I stated joyfully.

Eloise  tried to laugh and be nice to hide the feelings that bothered her about Phyll getting married and here he was asking her to meet his fiancee the very first day. She had tried to get out of it but after Phyll goaded her incessantly, she gave in.

"What is wrong with you Eloise?" she asked herself as she drove out the Accra State University with Phyll still in her rearview mirror about to text his fiancee that She was having dinner with them tonight.
"Why couldn't you just say no!?" she chided herself.
"Phyll is your friend...he's getting married...you have to be supportive," a voice in her head counseled.

"Tweaa!.. What friend?..don't you know you're feeling this way because you still love him!...Yes L-O-V-E him!" another voice different from the first voice chipped in.

The debate between the two voices in her head wore on till she grew apprehensive about the said dinner and all the worst case scenarios that could happen when she met Phyll's fiancee.

At home, she had decided to listen to the former voice's counsel and had decided to be supportive of Phyll.

All feelings she had had to be buried. What would people think if they discovered she had them? She had thought. And so 7 o'clock pm found Eloise at the door of Phyll and his fiancee's house. She had rehearsed every word she was going to utter and every facial expression she was going to make lest an uncough and unwanted emotion of the jealous kind were to slip by her.

The door bell was rang and the hostess came to answer. Abigail's appearance and stature puzzled Eloise .  But the night was young and there was still more surprises to be unfolded...
